From cousins to colleagues
SANS MATIN originated as an idea whilst British cousins, Charly and Lockie Cunningham, were backpacking in South America. After a slight complication involving a pair of sneakers and a tumble-dryer, a new pair of sneakers were needed; a new pair of sneakers that were ideally original, stylish and would suit varied environments – London as much as a local bar in Medellin, Colombia. After exploring every option, they came to the conclusion that they didn't exist without costing an arm and a leg. With that, SANS MATIN was born.
Cultural shifts call for shifts in fashion
Over the last decade, we at SANS MATIN have seen an enormous cultural shift that has taken place in modern businesses and start-ups, which challenges traditional work-place norms; conventional working hours and, more significantly for us, stiff dress codes. Sneakers signify this shift in culture and have now become the everyday footwear staple in nearly all environments - from nightclubs to offices. Our brand name, SANS MATIN ('Without Morning'), embodies these ideologies and personifies the 'Work Hard, Play Hard' concept.
By implementing locally sourced (within two hours of our atelier), high-quality materials, handmade craftsmanship, and paired with a versatile style to adapt to the aforementioned cultural shifts, we at SANS MATIN have created a unique sneaker design with unquestionable comfort to suit all environments – comfort and style that we feel has been missing from the industry for too long.
Family is built into the brand
As cousins we place great value on the importance of family. We work very closely together and actively implement a family culture throughout the SANS MATIN brand. The factory, where all SM products are handmade, is also a family run business. Having visited serval times, we have formed incredible relationships with everyone there. Our family-first culture has allowed for a very positive working environment for us and for all those involved in the brand, and we feel privileged to be working alongside such an incredible team.
We are always thinking about the bigger picture...
We are in the process of researching various ways to build on our brand's ideology of rivalling the ‘greenest’ leather/footwear/clothing brands available. We aim to do this by implementing the very best sustainable leathers (exclusively byproducts of the meat industry), non-plastic based vegan materials, organic cottons, naturally sourced rubber, and recycled materials (such as PET). Our commitment to locally sourced materials ensure that we meet our goals of maximising our sustainability, and minimising our carbon footprint.
